European research at TEDx

The EUREKA BLUETECH project was presented in June at the TEDxBinnenhof, an independently organised TED event featuring ten inspiring talks on ground-breaking ideas from the Netherlands.

TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) events, created in 1990 in Monterey, California are now famous worldwide. The yearly conferences in the Silicon Valley have become a farm for local “Tedx events” scattered in all the world. Tedx events remain reference conferences, still formed to disseminate “ideas worth spreading” in a specific way. Each speaker, selectively chosen, has to be interesting, and has to explain and share what he has to tell within less than 18 minutes.

The talk was given by Allard van Hoeken, Manager New Energy at Bluewater Energy Services, the leading participant of the EUREKA BLUETECH project. Van Hoeken explained to the assistance the potential of tidal waves as a reliable source of energy that can be tapped thanks to the floating sructures developed by his company and two Italian partners during the project.

INSPIRE. Before making a video, giving a talk, or training for a press conference : look at TED and TEDx conferences : in terms of dissemination, they are just the best speakers who talk about research and innovation you can see in videos.

Higgs Boson discovery & Comic Sans font

The 99.9999% discovery of Higgs Bosons was announced yersteday. It was all crazy on twitter, the keyword #Higgs has become rapidly a world trending topic on social media. Among all the tweets I’ve seen, a lot of them dealt with how great this discovery is, and also how bad and shameful the presentation slides were, using Comic Sans font. CBC News Community has storified some of these comments. I will post their work here. And please stop using Comic Sans Font!

#Ecsite2012 Communicating European Achievements in space

Here is a post I made while being at Ecsite 2012 Conference, The European Science centre annual conference. I am reblogging mysfelf here since I truly agree with the European Space Agency (ESA) strategy : to work with science centres and museum together. I hope every FP7 project communication manager could benefit from the European Science centre network to broadcast what his project is about. Maybe the FP7 project called PLACES could be used for that as well.

knowtex:

Before the Ecsite 2012 annual conference starts in Toulouse, France, our team has attended the Communicating European Achievements in Space. It was the opportunity for ESA, CNES and Astrium to tell us about their outreach strategy, mostly about developping partnerships with science museums and science centres.

We had the chance to interview Fernando Doblas, head of communication of ESA.
